Why local businesses lose customers in the map “3-pack” (and how to win it)

June 11, 2026 · gmbpartnerseo@gmail.com

When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a map and three highlighted businesses before any normal result. That short list — the local pack, or 3-pack — captures most of the clicks, calls and direction requests. If you’re not in it, those customers go to whoever is.

Getting into the pack isn’t luck. Google ranks profiles on three things: relevance, proximity and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search — categories, services and description. Proximity is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how established and trusted you appear, driven heavily by reviews, citations and links.

Proximity you can’t control, but relevance and prominence you absolutely can. Most competitors have a thin, neglected profile, which means the bar to overtake them is lower than you’d expect.

Focus your energy where it counts: get your categories and services exactly right, build a steady flow of genuine reviews, keep your information consistent across the web, and earn a few relevant local links. Do this consistently and you’ll move from invisible to one of the three businesses customers actually see.

It takes time, especially in competitive areas — but the local pack is winner-take-most, which is exactly why it’s worth the effort.
